Anti-Cancer Diet

The Anti-Cancer Cookbook [Paperback]
Dr. Julia Greer (Author)

More than one-third of most cancer cases could have been prevented by following a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight, says the American Institute for Cancer Research. The anti-cancer diet is a healthy diet that includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods from all of the food groups. The diet includes more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, lean meats, nuts and seeds, while reducing your intake of processed foods, saturated fat, sodium and foods with added fat and sugar. In addition, the American Cancer Society recommends you consume at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day to limit your risk of cancer. Including dragon fruit in your diet can help you meet these recommendations.

Grapes:  The skin of red grapes is a particularly rich source of an antioxidant called resveratrol. Grape juice and red wine also contain this antioxidant. According to the National Cancer Institute, resveratrol may be useful in keeping cancer from beginning or spreading. Lab studies have found that it limits the growth of many kinds of cancer cells; in men, moderate amounts of red wine have been linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer.

Mangosteen:  Various studies have shown that phytoceuticals in Mangosteen (in some cases known to be its xanthones) have properties such as: anti-tumor (shrinks tumors), anti-leukemia, antifungal (critical for all cancer patients), antibacterial (to protect DNA), antioxidants (at least two dozen different kinds of xanthones are in the mangosteen fruit), antiproliferation, kills cancer cells and causes apoptosis (programmed cell death) for some types of cancer.

Blueberries:  As a tasty treat, berries are hard to beat. But their juicy goodness also may make them one of the foods to fight cancer. Berries contain particularly powerful antioxidants, meaning they can halt a naturally occurring process in the body that creates free radicals that can damage your cells. Compounds in berries may also help keep cancers from growing or spreading. So, as part of your anti-cancer diet, pick up a handful of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, or any other favorite berries today.

Goji Berries:  Goji berries are known to be effective in treating cancer. When these berries are consumed on a regular basis, the cancerous cells of the body slow down their growth process. In fact the consumption of goji is known to interrupt the growth process of the cells. Cancerous cells are known to grow fast and then divide themselves causing the spread of the disease. When goji berries are consumed on a regular basis this process can be stopped.  And, are known to help in the treatment of cancer as they help to combat radiation. Those patients who have these fruits on regular basis are known to be protected from the dangerous effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Chemotherapy is known to have several side effects which cancer patients cannot probably escape – however, when they consume

Avacado:  Interesting recent research shows that avocado seems to be a potent warrior in the fight against prostate cancer. Avocados contain the highest amount of the carotenoid lutein of all commonly eaten fruits. In addition, they contain related carotenoids, including zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene, as well as significant amounts of vitamin E. A very recent study showed that an extract of avocado containing these carotenoids and tocopherols inhibited the growth of prostate cancer cells. Interestingly, when researchers used lutein alone, the cancer cells were unaffected, thus demonstrating once again that it’s the synergy of health-promoting nutrients in whole foods that makes the difference.  Side note: Research at Tufts University suggests that avocado can play an important role in optimizing brain health and function.

Noni:  Drinking noni juice may help protect you from prostate cancer . According to the authors of study published in 2010 in the “Proceedings of the Nutrition Society,” noni is an antineoplastic with prostate cancer cells. An antineoplastic is something that can inhibit the growth of cancerous cells.

Dragon Fruit:  Dragon fruit is also rich in antioxidants, including beta carotene and vitamin C. Antioxidants are nutrients in food that protect your cells from damage by unstable substances called free radicals. The damage to your cells caused by these free radicals can lead to cancer. Including more antioxidant-rich foods like dragon fruit in your diet may offer protection against cancer.

Acai Berries:  Acai Berries: are rich in special molecules known as antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect the body from molecules known as reactive oxygen species. Reactive oxygen species, sometimes called free radicals, are substances that can damage DNA and other structures in your body. DNA damage may cause genetic mutations to occur that change normal cells into cancerous ones. In theory, acai berry may help protect against cancer by virtue of its antioxidant content.

Soursop:  Soursop or graviolahas the innate ability to target the damaged cells and kill them causing a balance in the cycle of cell growth and development

Apple:  Apples were identified as the greatest source of antioxidants (phenolics) and CAA in the modern American diet.  one type of antioxidant, called procyanidins, triggered a series of cell signals that resulted in cancer cell death.

Citrus:  The verdict on citrus fruits and cancer is still out; nevertheless, a healthy dose of citrus fruits and citrus juices is an effective way to improve immune function and increase protection against DNA-damaging free radicals. Ultimately, adding citrus fruits to your diet is a highly effective cancer-prevention and -survival strategy.  Carcinogens are cancer-causing compounds that enter our bodies via a number of sources (our diet, tobacco smoke, sunlight or other toxic exposures). There are certain enzymes in our bodies that help eliminate carcinogens, therefore reducing their ability to harm the body. Grapefruits work to induce Phase 1 and phase 2 enzymes that are responsible for detoxifying carcinogens.

Pomegranate:  Pomegranate has been in use as a traditional medicine in many cultures since ancient times. Medline Plus reports that recorded treatments date from around 1500 BC. The American Cancer Society states that a component of pomegranate, ellagic acid, was studied as a cancer remedy in the 1970s and 1980s. Several small laboratory studies were published in the mid-1990s, and ellagic acid gained a reputation as a cancer-fighting substance. Although ellagic acid may inhibit tumor growth in animals and kill cancer cells in laboratory studies, randomized, placebo controlled clinical trials are needed to prove the effectiveness of pomegranate against cancer in humans.

Strawberries:  As a tasty treat, berries are hard to beat.

Kiwi:  Excellent source of vitamin C. This nutrient is the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body, neutralizing free radicals that can cause damage to cells and lead to problems such as inflammation and cancer. In fact, adequate intake of vitamin C has been shown to be helpful in reducing the severity of conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma, and for preventing conditions such as colon cancer, atherosclerosis, and diabetic heart disease. And since vitamin C is necessary for the healthy function of the immune system, it may be useful for preventing recurrent ear infections in people who suffer from them.

Garlic:  Several large studies have found that those who eat more garlic are less likely to develop various kinds of cancer, especially in digestive organs such as the esophagus, stomach, and colon. Ingredients in the pungent bulbs may keep cancer-causing substances in your body from working, or they may keep cancer cells from multiplying. Experts don’t know how much you need to eat to prevent cancer, but a clove a day may be helpful.

Tomatoes:  Some research has found that eating tomatoes may help protect men from prostate cancer. The juicy red orbs can help guard the DNA in your cells from damage that can lead to cancer. Tomatoes contain a particularly high concentration of an effective antioxidant called lycopene. Your body may absorb lycopene better from processed tomato foods such as sauce, which means that whole-wheat pasta with marinara sauce could be a delicious way to help lower your risk of this disease.

Cruciferous Vegetables:  the group containing broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower — may be particularly helpful in protecting you from cancer. Researchers have found that components in these veggies can protect you from the free radicals that can damage your cells’ DNA. They may also shield you from cancer-causing chemicals, help slow the growth of tumors, and encourage cancer cells to die. They’re a tasty and healthy addition to your anti-cancer diet.

Green Tea:  Tea contains antioxidants called catechins, which may help prevent cancer in a variety of ways, including keeping free radicals from damaging cells. Lab studies have found that catechins in tea can shrink tumors and reduce tumor cell growth. Some — but not all — studies in humans have also linked drinking tea to a lower risk of cancer. Both green and black teas contain catechins, but you’ll get more antioxidants from green tea, so you may want to consider a cup or more in your anti-cancer diet.

Whole Grains: According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, whole grains contain many components that might lower your risk of cancer, including fiber and antioxidants. A large study including nearly half a million people found that eating more whole grains might lower the risk of colorectal cancer, making them a top item in the category of foods to fight cancer. Oatmeal, barley, and brown rice.

Tumeric:  This orange-colored spice, a staple in Indian curries, contains an ingredient called curcumin (not the same as cumin) that might be useful in reducing cancer risk. According to the American Cancer Society, curcumin can inhibit some kinds of cancer cells in laboratory studies and slow the spread of cancer or shrink tumors in some animals. Turmeric is easy to find in grocery stores, and you can use it in a variety of recipes.

Leafy Green Vegetables:  Spinach and lettuce are good sources of the antioxidants beta-carotene and lutein. You’ll also find these nutrients in vegetables that are more traditionally eaten cooked, like collard greens, mustard greens, and kale. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, some lab studies have found that chemicals in these foods may limit the growth of some kinds of cancer cells.

Beans:  Certain fruits and vegetables and other plant foods get plenty of recognition for being good sources of antioxidants, but beans often are unfairly left out of the picture. Some beans, particularly pinto and red kidney beans, are outstanding sources of antioxidants and should be included in your anti-cancer diet. Beans also contain fiber, and eating a high-fiber diet may also help reduce your risk of cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
